1, Intent

At Shinfield St Mary's, we encourage our pupils to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build their social skills, their resilience and their confidence as well as embed our school values.

Through the use of the 'Charanga' scheme, which contains carefully planned sequential units of work and lessons, pupils will be able to develop skills in listening, performing, improvisation and reading notation. We believe high quality music lessons will inspire children to think innovatively, develop creativity independence, judgement, critical thinking and self-reflection.

Children will be introduced to a range of works through a variety of musicians and musical styles throughout history. In addition, children will gain an understanding of historical and cultural developments of music. As they progress to Year 6, children are exposed to a variety of songs and through this, they learn how the structure of music works.
