1. Intent

A high-quality language education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. It provides the foundation for learning other languages, eventually equipping pupils to study and work in other countries. Latin links widely across the primary curriculum with clear links to history, English, science and maths and gives pupils an appreciation of classical civilisation. Learning Latin can enrich spoken and written language and also enables those children who speak additional languages at home to bring their extra knowledge to the classroom.

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
