2. Implementation

Each year group will complete three Art & Design units over the year: each unit will be around 6-8 weeks. Alongside the teaching of core skills and experimentation, the children will be taught about key artists (and movements) that have had a profound impact on art today. Each unit will have a specific focus: artist based; skill/discipline based; or medium based. To ensure a thorough understanding of the learning, and to provide opportunities for self-reflection and development of ideas, each unit will follow the SERRP structure:

  •     Stimulate
  •     Explore
  •     Record
  •     Refine
  •     Present

Stimulate: Pictures/images; variety of examples for children to annotate; quick activities for children to complete (sketches etc); big questions; slow reveal; iPad/digital art activities.

Explore: Investigate and experiment with a variety of materials; experience the skill/medium in new ways; make mistakes; see how mediums act/react being applied in unusual ways; using tools other than paint brushes; looking around at other art produced by the class.

Record: work in books; work on walls; work on playground; physical art photographed; big art/small art.

Refine: Annotate work; compare and contrast with other students/famous artists; identify main area for improvement; identify main area of success.

Present: Either as a final piece or just any work that stands out - share with class; mini gallery opening; children discuss their interpretations.

Sketchbooks

Every pupil will have a sketchbook that they will use to explore, record and refine their ideas. They will use one sketchbook for Year 3/4 and another one for Year 5/6.
