4. Early Reading, phonics and spelling

To support our children in their journey to being confident and fluent readers, some children will be offered Little Wandle 7+ Catch phonic sessions. This follows on from the phonic provision offered at Shinfield Infant school and as such provides a consistent approach to early reading. Extra help and support is offered through weekly phonic lessons and a copy of the slides from the parents workshop is included here for more information. The Little Wandle website itself also has lots of useful information for parents and includes videos of pronunciation of sounds for practice.

Please don't hesitate to contact us for more information or to find out any which areas your child might need more practice with.                                                                                           Letters and Sounds

The decodable books that the children have been reading at school are available through our subscription to Collins ebooks. The children have a username and password in their school diaries.

Follow this link to login:

If you can't find the password or have any technical difficulties, please let your class teacher know.

Spelling

We use the National curriculum to identify spelling rules and patterns in line with children's age expectations. After ensuring children are confident in phonics, we build on this knowledge to help children apply sounds to spelling and identify tricky words.  We teach spelling explicitly and implicitly in our English lessons and especially in our writing, where vocabulary is stretched and there is a focus on correct spelling in the editing process.  A copy of the spelling appendix from the national curriculum can be found here:

The key word lists for Years 3-4 and Years 5-6 are attached below. If you have any questions about spelling, please ask your class teacher what patterns we are focusing on this term.
