Berkshire School Games Finals

28th June 2019

After a hugely successful summer of sport at Shinfield St. Mary’s, it was our pleasure to invite a host of children to not only represent our school, but Wokingham Borough in the Berkshire School Games County Finals. The event once again was held at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre on Friday 28th June. We were very fortunate to be hosted at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre where many teams will be playing on facilities on which both GB and England squads train. Shinfield St. Mary’s took three squads to the county finals – tennis, golf and cycling. The children were also lucky to compete in Bell Boating (team canoeing) and a variety of other activities including CPR training, teamwork games and a fire safety fitness session before they competed in their respective sports in the afternoon.

The golfers fought hard but unfortunately they finished in fourth place despite performing admirably on each station. The tennis players also narrowly missed out on a medal but many of them got the chance to play on high quality clay courts against extremely talented opposition. The cyclists, however, stormed to victory not only in the team scores but individually too. Shinfield St. Mary’s had the 1st and 2nd placed boys, along with the 1st and 3rd placed girls. Their consistency across the sprint and long distance events meant that they won the overall team gold medal as well as the final team relay race. This is the second year in a row that Shinfield St. Mary’s have triumphed in the cycling and been crowned Berkshire champions!

Mr Lappin was very proud, not only of the children in the Berkshire Finals, but all the children who have represented the school this term across all the sports on offer.
