Berkshire County Kwik Cricket Finals

17th July 2019

With the two School Games Days completed, it was time for the final sporting event of the year last Thursday – the county kwik cricket finals! Once again, we were blessed with scorching sunshine as a team of Year 5/6 girls and Year 5/6 boys made their way on the school minibus to Wokingham Cricket Club. Having won through the Level 2 competition, they were representing the borough of Wokingham against the other areas of Berkshire. Mrs Smith spent the day with the boys who competed with steely determination, winning their group games and semi-final comfortably to progress through to the final. The girls progressed through the group stages too, leading them to a semi-final which proved to be a tough match, ending in a rare draw! Unlike the recent World Cup ‘Super Over’, the organisers decided that they would instead run a bowl-off between the girls. Tensions were high but two Shinfield St. Mary’s girls managed to hit the stumps in the bowl-off and take them through to the finals, like the boys! It was the first time ever at county level that one school had a team in both the boys’ and girls’ finals. Unfortunately, it was a step too far and the boys fell 20 runs short with the girls falling only 9 runs short. Silver medals at county level is the first in cricket for Shinfield St. Mary’s and a fantastic send-off for the departing Year 6 children who competed.

A special thanks go to Mr Ellison for transporting a number of the girls to and from Wokingham Cricket Club on the day.
