Phoenix & Ranelagh Hockey Festival

27th September 2019

For the first time ever, a Shinfield St. Mary’s hockey squad attended the Phoenix & Ranelagh Schools’ Hockey Festival at Reading University. Led by Mrs Webb and our resident hockey coach, Mrs Sanders, a group of Year 5 and 6 children travelled to engage in hockey skills sessions, receive expert club coaching and compete in a mini tournament. The rain hammered down during the tournament but Shinfield St. Mary’s emerged victorious, claiming first place and receiving a trophy which now resides in the Reception trophy cabinet. With most of the Shinfield St. Mary;s children having not played hockey, or on an astro turf pitch since last year’s Wokingham tournament, they adapted really well and achieved success against regular club hockey players playing for other schools. Mr Lappin was delighted to hear about the triumphant trip but more importantly, that the children showed resilience and a sporting awareness across a sport that has not been practised in school yet!
