School Games – Year 5/6 Netball A,B&C Teams

18th October 2017

Once again, Shinfield St. Mary’s turned out in force for the annual Wokingham School Games netball tournaments with one team entering into the ‘A’ league and two teams entering into the ‘B’ league. With 29 boys and 30 girls attending the netball practices last half term, the depth of talent was clear to see and selection for all three teams was extremely tough. The ‘A’ tournament was held on Wednesday 18th October at Bulmershe School and the 7-strong squad arrived with much excitement at the prospect of competing against the very best Wokingham netballers. The team eased through their group games, showing a far superior court awareness and counter-attacking movement which resulted in points being scored by most team members. Their resulting semi-final match resulted in a comfortable 2-0 win against Willowbank, before arriving in the final to compete against Westende. After full time, the scores were level and the final had to be replayed so that an overall winner would be announced. Unfortunately a late point scored by Westende crushed Shinfield’s chances of winning the tournament. The team walked away with a silver medal, bettering last year’s fourth place and Mr Lappin was immensely proud of their style of play and skill level when pitted against regular netball league players.

It was then the turn of the ‘B’ Festival and due to a school dropping out at the last minute, Shinfield were once again able to enter two teams, much to the delight of the netball club children! The matches that the two Shinfield teams competed in on the day were fantastic to watch and to say that the two teams won comfortably would be an understatement. Bar a 0-0 draw in one match, the rest of their games were convincing wins with almost every child scoring a point at some stage in the festival. The fluidity of defence to attack and court awareness shown by the Shinfield children was extremely impressive and a depth of talent that many schools dream of having!

Mr Lappin would like to thank all the parents who provided lifts to and/or from the netball events – we would not be able to give the children these competitive opportunities without your continued support. Also, he would like to thank those children who were able to come before school at 8am to rehearse shooting and work through match scenarios. It really paid off!
