School Games – Year 5/6 Hockey

16th November 2017

On Thursday 16th November, our 8 strong hockey squad made their way to Sonning Hockey Club after lunchtime to compete in the annual Wokingham tournament (with 51 attendees at the practices, selection on the previous Monday’s practice had been tough to carry out!). The squad arrived a couple of hours before the start of the tournament so that the children could get used to the speed of the hockey astro surface and experience the size of the hockey pitch they would be playing on later that afternoon. Once all the 12 schools had arrived, two pools of 6 teams were randomly drawn and Shinfield began their group games. Starting with a 0-0 draw, they followed up with a 2-0 win, two more 0-0 draws and a 0-2 loss. Despite setting the record for the best defence in the whole tournament, they failed to make it out of the group stage. Having only completed two after school club practices before the day of the tournament, Mr Lappin could not have asked for any more from his squad. They battled against experienced club hockey players and more than held their own, making many confident opposition teams look distinctly average!

Such was the enjoyment within the after school practices and the curriculum time hockey lessons this term, there is now a keen interest amongst many individuals in the school to join a hockey club. Sonning Hockey Club offer fantastic training on a Tuesday evening, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Their Junior section caters for children from 6 years upwards and welcomes new members of all abilities and playing experience. If your child would like to try out a session (maybe with a friend or two!), then please speak to Mr Lappin as children will be able to sign out a school hockey stick to use. A stick of their own can be bought further down the line if they enjoy playing!
