School Games Orienteering Competition

10th May 2018

On Thursday 10th May, the Year 6 Orienteering team were led by Mrs Ganpatsingh into the Level 2 competition at Woodford Park. They were also joined by a Year 5/6 team who were a last minute addition due to another school pulling out 48 hours before the competition was due to commence. Each team of 12 children had to work in pairs to locate waypoints on their maps, stamp their card at the waypoint, before returning to the start line as fast as possible – the team with the fastest time overall would be crowned the winner. With Mr Lappin marshalling on the far side of the course, Mrs Ganpatsingh coordinated both teams to ensure that the pairs sent off in the right order to reach their waypoints. The competition is viewed to be one of the hardest sporting competitions in the calendar as the children are independent throughout and have to read the map themselves and navigate the course without any adult assistance. A real tester of the children’s teamwork and resilience!

Despite the difficulty of the event, the second Shinfield team, who were completely new to the sport 48 hours previous, were announced in 5th place! And the first Shinfield team were crowned the gold medalists in 1st place! Another Shinfield team on the way to the Level 3 Berkshire Finals on the 27th June – fantastic!
