Wokingham Year 5/6 Hockey Tournament

18th November 2016

Having been selected through their PE lessons, 12 children from Year 6 attended a trials session at Sonning Hockey Club the week before the In2 Hockey tournament date. This gave Mr Lappin a chance to see the children play on astro turf, and allowed them to get used to the speed of the surface and size of the pitch. Thursday 17th November approached rapidly and the A and B teams were excited and quietly confident.

Shinfield A team started strongly in the tournament, topping their group after a number of wins. Unfortunately the B team missed out on going through their group by a goal difference of one! However, this meant that the A team had some very vocal support going into the semi-final. The semi-final contained energy and a lot of skilful play was on show by both teams, but the final whistle blew with the score at 0-0. Extra time then began, but yet again no-one scored before the final whistle. It was then decided that the teams would play in a ‘golden goal’ format, with a player being removed from each team every 2 minutes until it became 1 v 1. The Shinfield children were dead on their feet by this point and down to 4 players, they conceded which meant they were sent into the 3rd v 4th playoff instead of the Final. Tears were shed as the golden goal went in but Mr Lappin was bursting with admiration because he had just seen how much it meant to the team. They could not have given anything more for their teammates and their school.

The 3rd v 4th match is being played in the near future, so watch this space!
