Year 3 and 4 Tennis Success

13th June 2017

On Tuesday 13th June, Shinfield St. Mary’s entered two teams into the Wokingham Year 3/4 Tennis Competition at Shinfield Tennis Club. With an ‘A’ team of Year 4 children and a ‘B’ team of Year 3 children, Shinfield arrived at the tennis club in glorious sunshine, eager to get started. The two Shinfield teams were put in separate groups and individual players were seeded 1-8 to ensure that abilities were matched across the 8 schools in attendance. As the group games went on, it was clear to Mr Lappin that the Shinfield children were loving the experience of representing Shinfield St. Mary’s Junior School. The children raced off the courts at the end of each game with excited faces, proudly sharing their scores with each other, regardless of the outcome.

It was then announced that the ‘A’ team were through to the final to play Willowbank, with the ‘B’ team through to the bronze medal match against Southlake! As the final and bronze medal matches commenced, the tension in the crowd evident with many finger nails being chewed. Finally, after 10 minutes of hard-fought points, Shinfield ‘A’ team were crowned gold medallists and Wokingham champions! This was an amazing achievement for the Year 4 team, but Mr Lappin was equally proud of the Year 3 team who came 4th because they had been competing the whole afternoon against children who were a year older!

It is the turn of the Year 6 team this afternoon…they have a lot to live up to!
